Frequently Asked Questions
What is a terrarium?
A terrarium is a tiny, self-sustaining world that lives in any clear glass container with a snug lid. The lid helps trap moisture and gases, creating a recycling system that keeps your plants and moss thriving for years. Water is absorbed by the roots, released through the leaves, and the lid acts like a little raincloud, returning moisture to the soil so the cycle can start again. With proper care, a terrarium can live for decades without needing to be opened or rewatered! Just remember, occasional trimming and cleaning will help keep it looking its best.
Where did the name Plush Moon Terrarium Co originate?
The name Plush Moon Terrarium Co. was inspired by the gentle, otherworldly quality that moss, along with the world of terrariums, evokes. Moss is one of nature’s plushest beauties, with its soft, velvety texture and vibrant green hues. It’s easy to overlook, but moss holds a quiet elegance that often goes unnoticed in the hustle of everyday life. Its gentle, cushion-like surface creates a calming, lush environment in any terrarium, adding a sense of tranquility and life to your space. Moss is a reminder of the small, delicate wonders that surround us—its subtle charm is something we seldom take the time to appreciate, yet it brings so much beauty to the world in its own quiet way.
In many cultures, the moon symbolizes calmness, transformation, and the ebb and flow of life. It is a constant companion in the dark, a serene presence that contrasts with the fast pace of daily living. Like moss, the moon is often underappreciated, its beauty revealed only to those who pause to look up. Together, moss and the moon evoke a sense of quiet beauty that inspires reflection and appreciation of the natural world.
Plush Moon Terrarium Co. came to life from a desire to bring people closer to nature, creating spaces that are both beautiful and sustainable. It’s about celebrating nature’s small, often unnoticed wonders—like moss—and sharing the joy of nurturing life in a jar. Every terrarium built is a piece of living art, a reminder that even in the smallest spaces, there’s a world full of beauty waiting to be appreciated <3
What are the benefits of terrariums?
Terrariums offer more than just a visually soothing space—they can have a positive impact on mental health, especially for those who may be processing trauma or experiencing stress. Creating and caring for a terrarium can be a deeply grounding experience. The process of building a miniature ecosystem helps bring mindfulness into focus, providing a hands-on opportunity to slow down, center oneself, and connect with nature in a controlled, manageable way.
For those navigating life challenges, the act of nurturing life, no matter how small, can be incredibly healing. It encourages patience, promotes feelings of accomplishment, and gives individuals a tangible sense of care and responsibility. The vibrant greenery and peaceful nature of terrariums also contribute to a calming environment, helping reduce anxiety and promoting relaxation.
The consistent, yet low-maintenance care required for a terrarium can provide a sense of routine and stability, important for those dealing with emotional turmoil. Plus, there's something uniquely comforting about watching something grow, knowing that with the right attention, life will thrive—it's a gentle reminder of resilience and the beauty that can emerge from care and attention, no matter the circumstances.
In short, terrariums can provide a safe space for healing, growth, and self-care, offering both a creative outlet and a form of therapy for the mind and spirit.
What are the different types of terrariums?
Closed Terrariums – These are like little self-sustaining ecosystems! They have a sealed glass container that helps create a humid environment, perfect for plants that thrive in moisture, like ferns, moss, and ivy. The moisture from the plants evaporates, condenses, and falls back down, making them low-maintenance and ideal for beginners.
Open Terrariums – These are great for plants that prefer a drier environment, such as succulents, cacti, or air plants. The open design allows for better airflow, which helps prevent mold or rot and suits desert-loving plants who don't need a lot of humidity.
Bioactive Terrariums – These are a bit like closed terrariums, but they go a step further by including small creatures like insects, snails, or even reptiles to create a full ecosystem. They help break down waste and keep things running smoothly without much human intervention.

We welcome terrarium builders of all ages! What size terrariums can we make in-store at the DIY Terrarium Building Bar?
Do you offer springtails and/or isopods for sale?
Do you have bio-active terrariums?
Do you use cactus or succulents in your terrariums?
Terrariums with a lid maintain a humidity level of 80-90%, which makes them an ideal environment for tropical plants to flourish! These plants thrive in that moisture, offering vibrant, colorful foliage all year round, and some may even bloom after a few months.
Due to the high humidity, we typically don't use cacti or succulents in our closed terrariums. However, if you're interested in a custom desert terrarium, please feel free to email us at help@pmterrarium.com or give us a call at 865-407-0172.
I have a unique container that I’d love to turn into a terrarium. Can you help with that?
Yes, we’d be happy to plant your own container! Simply bring it into our shop during regular hours. There’s a $10 cleaning fee for your container, along with a $35 minimum fee, which covers all the plants, soils, rocks, gravel, and moss needed to create a smaller terrarium. For larger terrariums, we charge $150 per cubic foot. You’re welcome to share as much input as you’d like on the design, or let us surprise you with a "Creator's Choice" design!
What terrariums supplies do you carry?
We sell all our terrarium building supplies in store al la carte style. We offer everything you need for your terrarium projects, including drainage layers, soil, plants, moss, and decorative rocks. Items are subject to availability and quantities may be limited.
Can I return a terrarium?
Unfortunately, we do not accept returns for a refund due to the nature of live plants. If you have any concerns about your terrarium, please reach out to us directly at help@pmterrarium.com
How do terrarium repairs work?
If your terrarium is looking overgrown, untidy, or struggling, schedule a "terrarium spa" session during our regular open hours! We’ll assess its condition and recommend the next best step—whether it's a simple trim or a full replanting with deep sanitization and a fresh start. Your terrarium comes with a 60-day warranty from the date of purchase or after you build it in a class for terrariums priced at $100 or more.
Repairs generally take one to four weeks, depending on the size, and we’ll contact you by call or text when it’s ready for pickup. While we do our best to accommodate, please note that terrariums not picked up within 30 days after completion will become property of the shop and will not be returned.
Will you repair my terrarium even if I didn't buy it at Plush Moon Terrarium Co?
Oh no, my terrarium isn't doing well! Can you assist me?
Terrariums are living ecosystems, and while we take every precaution, sometimes things can go awry. That's why we offer a warranty on all terrariums priced at $100 or more, as long as the care instructions on the care card have been followed. If any issues arise within 60 days of purchasing or building your terrarium in one of our classes, just let us know! We’ll arrange a time for you to bring it in, and we'll take care of it at no charge (though tips are always appreciated if you're happy with our service).
Can I place my terrarium in direct sunlight?
Terrariums should avoid direct sunlight as they can overheat. Place them in well-lit areas with bright indirect sunlight or under fluorescent/artificial plant grow lights.
What temperature is best for my terrarium?
For optimal plant health, we recommend maintaining a consistent room temperature of 65-70°F
Should I rotate my terrarium?
Rotating your terrarium periodically helps ensure even plant growth!
What type of water should I use?
Use spring, distilled, or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup and prevent moss browning. Avoid tap water as it can harm moss and/or clean up crew inhabitants (isopods, springtails, frogs, etc.).
Does condensation on the glass mean my terrarium has enough water?
Not necessarily. Condensation on the glass doesn’t always indicate sufficient moisture; it's better to check the soil color for dryness. Ideally the soil should be darker in color and air pockets should be seen between moist soil granules.
How can I prevent mold in my terrarium?
Avoid over-spraying water on foliage. Direct water spray closer to the plant base or down the glass instead only if terrarium soil/sphagnum moss becomes lighter in color and terrarium seems more dry. Adding beneficial insects such as springtails can help cut back on any decaying plant material!
What if my terrarium plants start looking unhealthy?
Check the lighting and water conditions to make sure they align with the care guidelines. Make adjustments as needed. Refer to our care guide shown below:
Can I remove dead plants from my terrarium?
Yes, for non-bioactive enclosures, we recommend promptly removing any deceased plants.
How do I maintain an overgrown terrarium?
You can prune leaves as needed. If the plants are overgrown or smothering each other, they can be trimmed.
Should I bring my terrarium back to the store for maintenance?
If you’re comfortable with it, you can prune and clean your terrarium at home. However, if you need assistance or want a professional touch, feel free to bring it back for our maintenance services!
What should I do if my terrarium fogs up?
This can happen if a door or window is opened, causing the temperature to drop. The fog will clear up as the room warms. If the terrarium was created outside, let it adjust for 1-2 hours indoors before sealing it again.
How do I manage humidity in my terrarium?
Humidity is generally self-sustaining in closed terrariums. However, if it gets too damp, open the lid briefly to allow air exchange.
Why does my moss look brown?
Browning moss can be due to using tap water, which often has minerals that harm moss. Use spring, distilled, or rainwater to keep moss green and vibrant.
What if I notice bugs in my terrarium?
A few small bugs are normal in bioactive terrariums, but if it becomes excessive, you may need to remove debris, trim plants, or add predatory insects like springtails to help manage them.
Can I add any plant to my terrarium?
Not all plants thrive in terrarium conditions. Choose plants that prefer high humidity and low light, such as ferns, mosses, and certain tropical plants.
How often should I clean the glass?
Cleaning frequency varies, but every few months is usually enough. Use a damp cloth or a small, soft brush to avoid scratching.
What should I do if my terrarium plants touch the glass?
When creating a new terrarium, if newly added plants press against the glass, they can grow mold. Trim them back slightly to ensure airflow and prevent water from pooling on leaves but gently shaking them!
Do I have to water my terrarium?
Terrariums do need water, but not nearly as much as houseplants, making them great gifts for those still working on their green thumb! The key to less frequent watering is a well-fitting lid—tight lids can go months, or even years, between waterings! If your container has a cork, a snug screw-on lid, or a rubber gasket, it likely only needs water once a year. Looser-fitting lids will require watering anywhere from every two to eight months. Easy care, long lasting reward!
How do I water my terrarium?
Watering your terrarium can feel a bit intimidating at first, but don’t worry—it’s easier than it seems! The secret to knowing when and how much to water lies in the color of the soil. When the soil is dark and saturated, like after a dark cup of tea, it’s in good shape. If it looks light and dry, it’s time to water.
Use a spray bottle or wash bottle (check out our in store options) to mist the sides of your terrarium—watch as the soil darkens and absorbs the water. Make sure to spray all around in a full 360-degree motion until you notice the soil darken again, but not dripping excessively into the drainage layer. Then, pop the lid back on, and you’re good to go until the next watering!
If you're worried you’ve overwatered, hold the terrarium up to see the bottom. Gently tilt it back and forth—if you notice water sloshing around for the next day or two, you may have added a bit too much. Simply leave the lid off for a few days to let the extra moisture evaporate. 🌿
What kind of lighting does my terrarium need?
Terrariums are perfect for adding a touch of greenery to your coffee table, office, windowsill, or even bathroom! Our terrariums feature tropical rainforest plants, which naturally grow beneath tree canopies, where they aren’t exposed to direct sunlight for long periods. Think of the soft, dappled light you see while walking under trees in a forest or around your neighborhood—this is called indirect lighting, and it’s what our plants thrive in. The best spot for your terrarium is in the brightest area of your home or near a bright artificial light source, but away from direct sunlight after noon. Ideal locations include north or east-facing windows, a bright skylight, or a spot far enough from a west or south-facing window where sunlight won’t touch the container.
